Organize Your Pencils, Pens And Markers

Today is all about organizing your pens, pencils and markers of all kinds.

There are more than a few ways to get all of these organized. As we have been saying, it all depends on the amount of markers, pens and pencils that you have as well as the space that you have for them.

Gathering them all together is the first step in this challenge

Gather them all together on a bed, counter or desk.

Keep them together by brand for the time being

Open each marker and on a scrap piece of paper check to see if the marker still has ink. Expect those markers that are refillable, heave those dry markers. Make sure that all the lids are tight on your markers.

If you have markers that are refillable, refill them now. If you do not have the reinkers, make a list of the reinkers that you need.

Make sure that no matter where you are storing your markers and pencils, there is no sun on them. This will dry the ink especially in the markers.

Making Swatch Sheets Or Charts

If you have not taken the time to make swatch sheets or charts, this is the time to do it! The major companies have swatch sheets that you can print out and just color in. If your product does not have a specific chart, there are blanks that you can print. Once you fill in the chart, you can put them into a page protector. I keep mine in a 3-ring binder.

Lots of people like to use swatch charts that they can use on their desks. No matter which way you go, swatch charts can make a big difference in your life. You will know what you have, what you need to replace and what you want to add to your collection.

If you need a blank color chart, just type in template blank color swatch chart. There are plenty of choices for all your needs.

If you are looking for a specific company blank chart, just type in blank color chart for the name of that specific brand and you should get a link.

Selecting And Setting Up Your Storage System

Now it's time to decide how to store all those pens, markers and pencils. One of your considerations is the information from the manufacturer. Some will tell you that the markers should be stored straight down with the tip down. Some say on the side. It is always wise to follow whatever they recommend.

Copic Markers- should always be stored vertically on their sides.

Sharpies should be stored with the tip down.

Alcohol markers should be stored on their sides so that the ink does not dry out.

Dual ended markers should be stored on their sides so that both ends will remain inky.

Single ended markers and gel pens should be stored upright with the tip down so that the ink pools where you need it.

Colored pencils can be stored either upright or on their sides. If you store them upright, make sure that the points of the pencils are up. That will protect them.

Grouping Your Pens And Pencils

There are two basic options for organizing your markers and pencils. You can group them by manufacturer or by color. I have several different markers and I like to keep all colors together. That way I only make one trip to find what I need. There are no set rules. So, decide which way works for you.
