Making Scrap Cards is easy if you have a large stash of scrap paper! |
I don't know about you, but I always wind up with piles of scraps whenever I start a paper project. It does not matter what the project is, there is always paper that I hate to throw away! Recently. I decided to put some of that paper to good use and get some cards done using what I have. I can bet that you can take some of these ideas and do the same with your stash.
I keep a stash of heavyweight 12 " by 12" white paper to use whenever I need to make a card base. With the cost of stamps going up again on August 29, 2021. (Stamps will now cost58 cents in the US) I am thinking about sticking to cards that can be machine processed rather than those that need to be hand stamped, except for very special occasions.
One of the things that I have done recently is to cut some scrap paper in advance. First, I decided what kind of paper scraps would I want to keep and use in my craft space. Since I also do a lot of junk journaling as well as card making and scrapbooking, I came up with some different sizes that would help me get my cards and other paper craft projects done with more time to craft and less time cutting paper.
You should use at least 90-110 lb. weight for all of your card bases. That way they will hold up/ You can get 2 x 6inch by 6-inch cards off of a 12 by 12-inch paper
Another way to get your bases done quickly is to use your electronic cutting machine. Most of the programs attached to them will have programmed card bases.
Here is how to get 4 5by 7-inch card bases off the same size paper:
Supplies
- Scrap paper in different sizes
- Paper trimmer
- Double-sided tape
- A sentiment of your choice
- Half gems
As you can see in this card, I selected two of the colors from the patterned paper.
- I cut the green paper 1/4 inch smaller than the base
- The heart paper was 1.4 inches smaller than the green base
- I added a strip of green paper in the center of the heart paper
- Then I added a thinner strip of heart paper on top of that
- I added an orange piece for the sentiment base
- Then A smaller piece of the green
- Then the sentiment
- A rotary trimmer or guillotine trimmer cuts easier and cleaner than a standard v-shaped trimmer
- A small amount of glue on the very bottom paper will give you a little time to make adjustments
- You can use a ruler and scissors to cut your paper
Just a few pieces of paper and some embellishments |
Supplies
- Card base of your choice
- I sheet of patterned cardstock 1/4 inch smaller than the base
- I sheet of cardstock 1/3 the width of the base and the same length
- Flowers or other embellishments
- Half gems
- Double-sided tape
- Tacky glue
- Ribbon
- Sentiment
- Cut the bottom piece of paper 1/4 inch smaller than the base and adhere to the base
- Measure and place the middle panel on top of that with double-sided tape.
- Adhere the sentiment mounted on a piece of the base cardstock
- Using the tacky glue, adhere the gems and the ribbon
Here is my final card for this session |
- Card base 5 by7"
- 1 piece of patterned paper 1/4 inch smaller than the card base
- 1inch panels of patterned paper 1/4 inch shorter than the base piece
- Double-sided tape
- Tacky glue
- Sentiment
- Half gems
- Cut and adhere a piece of cardstock 1/4 inches less than the size of your card base
- Starting with either side, adhere one panel, spacing it about 1/4 inch in from the edge of the paper below.
- Adhere the other panel to the opposite side
- Adhere the final panel in the center of the card
- Adhere the sentiment
- Adhere the gems as desired.
Tips To Consider
- Most gems come with the sticky part on them, but I find adding a tiny amount of glue, keeps them more secure. I like to put a little glue on a toothpick and use that on the card.
- You can get cards of clear gems. These are great to have in your stash because you can color them with alcohol markers to your needs. Just make sure that the gem is dry before you place it on the card, or you may spoil it
- Add a die cut sentiment. Youb can layer multiple cuts for additional detail
- Place a die cut on a piece of vellum. Add glue behind the letters so keep the vellum on the card.
- If you have a sentiment stamp or die out, cut and stamp two or three extras. keep them with the stamp or die. That way you will always have extras on hand
