Let's get back to basics. If you are a scrapbook artist like I am, then you know that the base page is one of the most important parts of the scrapbook page. It holds everything else on the page.
The first thing to consider is the weight of the paper that you are using for your base page. I always try to use at least 85-90 lb. paper. Especially if I am planning to have lots of embellishments and pictures. That way I am guaranteed that the page will hold up in the future.
The next thing to think about is do I use a solid color or a printed page for my base. Actually, you can use either, The trick is to really look at the pictures that you are using. Pick out a predominate color in the picture and use that to make the selection of colors for your base page and the other things that will go on it.
And yes, you can mix patterns as long as you stay within the same colors. There are no specific rules, just use what you find pleasing. Use washi tape to connect different parts of your base page.
You can also use ribbon to connect sections of your base page. Use doubled sided tape along the back of the ribbon. Remove the backing and adhere to the page.
I very much recommend using double sided tape to connect elements to the base page. My experience has been that glue will wrinkle to page and bubble the page no matter how evenly you spread it.
Using those lovely paper pads that you may have purchased is an easy and economical way to find your base page and any other papers that you may want to add to it. The papers are all coordinated for you ! They are often on sale and you do get a lot of bang for your buck.
Layering on your base page gives it lots of dimension. You can use just pieces of paper. Another fun thing is to get out the layered dies that you may own. You can easily cut out some fun shapes to add to your base page.
Scrapbook page sketches are blueprints that help you set up your pages. You can find free scrapbook sketches by typing in Scrapbook Sketches in your browser. Then click on images. You can select a sketch and print it. Or just leave it open while you create your page. These sketches make it easy to create beautiful pages in no time.
Having your papers organized makes it easier to design your pages. I sort by solid color and the patterns in that same color. That way it is easy to coordinate my pages in no time.
