Art Journal / Mixed Media - Magazine Pages

A simple magazine journal page from something that is really a passion of mine
I am a huge fan of recycling paper crafts. And when I journal, I really am drawn to using magazines in my journal. Between my sister and me, I have an infinite source of paper projects.

I get a lot of flower catalogs so there are lots of images within those to have all the flower pictures that I need.

When I pick up a magazine, I am looking for an image and  a group of words that appeal to me and my interests. It could be an image of a person, place or object that I might be able to journal in the future. It could be just a background color that it just right. I use a sharp scissor to cut out the images  or words that I need. I cut them out a little larger so that I can fussy cut to size later.

You can take pieces of magazine pages and rip them. Add them to pages in a random pattern of colors and shapes.

Cut out images of dresses, heads and accessories to create your own people. This reminds me of the paper dolls I played with as a child. This is very creative and a lot of fun. If you have a busy background behind your people, just take a marker , crayon or some ink to highlight around your shape.

Create a background first. It could be just a simple gesso and acrylic paint technique. It could be pieces of a book page, ripped and glued together, You can paint and stencil on your page. If you are using paints, allow time for the paint to dry before you start collaging.  It could be a combination of techniques. It is up to you!

Tip: If you are using paint, place a piece of parchment paper, waxed paper. or cardboard behind the page that you are working on so that nothing spills on the page behind.

When gluing images, I use a glue stick or Modge Podge. Most of the magazine images are on light paper. If you use a white craft glue, you may rip the paper. Heavier glues may rip the paper or cause bubbles. Gently smooth the image on the page.

You can also use pieces of the magazine to create a background. There are no right or wrong ways to do this collage techniques.

Make sure to Modge Podge over your magazine images to permanently seal them.

Experiment and have fun. Remember, journals are simply an expression of your feelings, interests and thoughts. It is rewarding to go back and see how you have felt and grown in your journaling experience.

Cute Unicorn Card

Today I need to create a bright and cheerful birthday card for my great granddaughter who is turning three. I wanted something that would express her great grandpa's and my love for her. We also wanted something that would catch her attention. The stamp set was one that I got from a magazine. It was one of those sets that often is included when you get stamping magazines. So, I am unable to identify it. It also had the hearts, flowers and a mouse and dolphin (more about the dolphin on another day. The set also had some dies for the animals, but not for the flowers. Beyond Basic Backgrounds

Today we are exploring back grounds for greeting cards using stamps and coordinating dies with embossing powders to create a totally different look. Welcome to another community tutorial as I take my journey through the Altenew Educator Class. I have to say that I love the soft look of these greeting cards.  For this technique you will need a stamp set with the coordinating dies. You will actually create a stencil using the dies for the image that you are using on your background. To create this stencil, you will want to use a heavy white cardstock, at least 90 Lbs. or more. That way, you will be able to use the stencil again. You also will want to make the stencil a bit larger than the actual card base. Overlapping will give you the best results.
