Water color pencils are very popular with paper crafters . That is because they are inexpensive and very portable. They have a water soluable base
Most paper crafters enjoy using water color pencils with stamped and printed images. But there is nothing to say that you cannot use water color pencils with freehand drawings. These pencils have been used on greeting cards, scrapbook pages, and mini albums.

Using Water Color Pencils On Greeting Cards

Ombre Effect

  • Trim your water color paper to the size of the front of your card
  • Stamp the image with Versafine Ink
  • Cover with clear embossing powder
  • Activate the embossing powder with a heat gun
  • Add more clear embossing powder and heat it with the heat gun again
  • Color the half the  image with one or any combination of colored pencils
  • With a sparkle pen, push the color up from the lower half of the image. This creates an ombre effect.
  • Use a paper towel to clean the brush
  • Use a piece of colored cardstock as a background for your card base

If you get outside the lines, just take a tiny brush and add a little water. Blot the water with a paper towel or a q-tip

Best Paper For Water Colored Paper

The best choice for any of these techniques and water color pencils would be a good water color paper.

Basic Technique Ideas

  • Use the water colored pencils dry.
  • Wet the paper first and then apply the colors. That creates softer lines.
  • Use other tools besides brushes. Use a toothbrush or a sponge to create different effects. Experiment and have fun !
  • After your watercolor image has dried, add detail with direct application of pencil.
  • Use a colorless blender pen to blend colors.
  • Color your image and then brush water over it with a wet brush. The water colored image will look different than the color you originally applied. You can control the intensity of the color by the amount of color you apply with the pencil.
  • Color your image after it is drawn or colored, then spray water on top of it. This is a little more difficult in that you need to control the spray. The water needs to blend the color without running.
  • Use the pencils like a watercolor pan or tube. You can either place some pencil color on a piece of scrap paper. Then pick up the color with a wet brush and apply to your image. Another way is to pick up the color directly off the pencil with a wet brush.

Background Techniques

  • Create a graded wash. Apply a dark pencil application and gradually go to a lighter shade.
  • Do a backwash technique. Wet your paper first. Apply one color at one end, then another color at the other end. The colors will bleed and blend together.
  • To create a sparkly effect , apply salt to a wet colored paper.
